About
About
These are touchstones for my work.
Is photography really a way to “capture an instant in time?”
My work challenges this view by exploring the history of photography and the science of light. I like to explore how different devices change our perception of time and space: handmade cameras, walk-in light installations, photo work with sound elements. These tools and devices formulate and extend my investigations of journeying, optics and time.
Viewers have said that my work evokes the memory-image that remains for them long after they have viewed a familiar location. I think this recognizes the importance I have always assigned to time, memory, and capturing the essence of the place. My imagery ranges from architectural icons, classic travelers’ destinations and gardens, to the natural environment and botanical studies.
I have been working with traditional photographic techniques for over 40 years. Various thematic bodies of work have evolved and technical innovations have merged to create new visual hybrids: innovative uses of pinhole, film, camera obscura, photogram, installation, and cyanotype all explore the world around us. The excitement, for me, lies not in photographing and reproducing something I can see, but in revealing the imperceptible (and maybe only the imagined) using the physics of light and time and traditional darkroom techniques.
Biography
Bos got a bit side-tracked during the 1980’s playing keyboards, singing and songwriting, most notably for the band Perfect World. She also worked as an education coordinator at art institutions such as The Oakville Galleries and The Power Plant in Toronto. During that time she continued to make pinhole cameras and images which kept her sane.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since the 1980’s. Notable national exhibitions include Light Echo at the McMaster Museum of Art in collaboration with Astronomer Doug Welch, It’s You! : Unexpected Photographs from Papua New Guinea at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, P.E.I., Reading Room at Cambridge Galleries and ‘See Attached’ a photographic dialogue with photographer Sarah Fuller at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery.
Her most recent series The Sleeping Green, No Man’s Land 100 Years Later , organized by the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, was presented internationally at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris in April 2017 and was exhibited across Canada including the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the McMichael Gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by the book The Sleeping Green published by the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery in partnership with the Canadian Cultural Centre.
Many of Bos’s recent exhibitions feature handmade cameras, walk-in light installations, and sound pieces. These tools and devices formulate and extend her investigations of journeying, time, and the science of light. This work appeared in the traveling exhibits; Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography, New Mexico Museum, Seeing, Science Gallery, Dublin Ireland. ‘See the Stars,’ a multi-aperture tent installation created for the ‘Midnight Sun Camera Obscura Festival’ in Dawson City, Yukon and Star Shed at McMaster Museum in Hamilton.
She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and The Banff Centre. Dianne’s work has been presented internationally in the USA, Ireland, France, Spain, Japan and Italy and she is a sought after presenter on, and instructor in, alternative photography techniques. She has taught at Sheridan College, Oakville; The University of Calgary; and the Alberta College of Art and Design. Her work is represented in many private and public collections including The National Gallery of Canada, Glenbow Museum, Art Gallery of Hamilton, and The McMaster Museum of Art. She has been twice nominated for the ScotiaBank Photography award, and co-founded Exposure: Alberta’s Photography Festival. She now divides her time between the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Canada and the foothills of French Pyrenees. She can be found on occasion singing or playing harmonica in a bar in France.
